When Biff stole a football from the locker room when he was in high school, and he claimed that he took it because the coach told him to work on his passing. Willy acts for a moment as if Biff should return it, but when Hap implies that Biff was wrong for taking the ball, Willy defends Biff and declares that the coach, rather than being angry with Biff for stealing, would have been proud and impressed with Biffs initiative. Willy tells Biff that its OK that he took the ball because the coach likes him. Willy tells his son its perfectly fine to steal from people, as long as you are well liked; theyll let you get away with it. Willy finds it impossible to understand how someone who was as popular and well liked as Biff was in high school, could have grown up to be such a failure. THE MONROE DOCTRINE IN THE 20TH CENTURY Essay Example For Students
THE MONROE DOCTRINE IN THE 20TH CENTURY Essay United States president Theodore Roosevelt announced the Roosevelt Corollary, an addendum to the 1823 Monroe Doctrine, in response to European nations that were trying to force Venezuela to repay its debts. Roosevelt threatened to send naval ships to Venezuela if those nations sought to forcibly collect the debt. Stability must be preserved, Roosevelt said in his 1904 annual message to Congress, even if it requires an exercise of international police power. The Roosevelt Corollary, based on the 1901 Platt Amendment, became the cornerstone of U.S. policy in Latin America. Herbert S. Parmet open sidebar In 1904 President Theodore Roosevelt claimed, in what became known as the Roosevelt Corollary, that the United States could intervene in any Latin American nation guilty of internal or external misconduct. Roosevelts statement was precipitated by Germany, Britain, and Italy, which were trying to force Venezuela to repay debts to those countries. Roosevelt involved the United States in s ettling the matter. The corollary was part of President Roosevelts address to Congress that year. Roosevelts corollary to the Monroe Doctrine set a precedent and therefore justified subsequent U.S. intervention in Caribbean states during the administrations of Presidents William Taft and Woodrow Wilson. By the 1920s Latin American countries were protesting U.S. involvement. We will write a custom essay on THE MONROE DOCTRINE IN THE 20TH CENTURY specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now In 1900, Theodore Roosevelt, then governor of New York and candidate for vice president of the United States on the Republican ticket, told a mens club in Chicago that our country calls out not for the life of ease, but for the life of strenuous endeavor. He argued that the United States should build its military power in order to be able to control events in the West Indies, the Philippines, and elsewhere. This outlook is an example of Roosevelts big stick policy, which he put into practice when he became president in 1901. It held that the United States needed to be strong enough to mold affairs in other countries, and that the threat of force would back up diplomacy. This article reflects the conventions and biases of the era in which it was written. In the 1920s and the 1930s, the United States reduced the doctrines scope by favoring action in concert with the other American republics. The Platt Amendment, which was part of the U.S. treaty with Cuba in 1903 and which provided for U.S. involvement in the rule of Cuba, was revoked in 1934. This emphasis on acting with other nations, or Pan-Americanism, continued during and after World War II with the Act of Chapultepec (1945) and the Rio Pact (1947), which declared that an attack on one American nation was an attack on all. The formation of the Organization of American States in 1948 was designed to achieve the aims of the Monroe Doctrine through Pan-Americanism. Subsequently, however, fear of Communism in Latin America prompted the United States to return to unilateral actions against Guatemala (1954), Cuba (1961), and the Dominican Republic (1965), without consulting its Latin American allies. The administration of U.S. President Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) openly espoused the Monroe Doctrine once again as it resisted Communism in the Americas. This reaffirmed the original intent of the Monroe Doctrine to prevent European expansion in the Americas. Despite this position, Reagan supported Britains claim to the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) off the coast of Argentina in 1982. Perhaps the most important event of Monroes administration was the proclamation of the Monroe Doctrine. The doctrine resulted from two problems. Adams was concerned over moves by Russia to establish colonies in the Oregon country. At the same time, Britain feared that the Holy Alliance, consisting of Austria, Prussia, France, and Russia, was ready to help Spain recover its colonies in Latin America. The British had obtained trading advantages in the new Latin American republics, and these very profitable arrangements would end if the republics were restored to Spanish rule. The British foreign secretary, George Canning, proposed that the United States join Britain in warning the Holy Alliance not to intervene in the western hemisphere. .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 , .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 .postImageUrl , .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 , .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387:hover , .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387:visited , .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387:active { border:0!important; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387:active , .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387 .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue4ee4e48f7e5f428838295a2a9aca387:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Ray Bradbury Biography EssayAdams had a firm reply to the Russian threat. As he reported later, he told the Russian diplomatic representative in Washington, D.C., that we should contest the right of Russia to any territorial establishment on this continent, and thatthe American continents are no longer subjects for any new European colonial establishments. Thus, Adams stated one principle of the Monroe Doctrine more than a year before Monroe stated it himself. His answer to Britain was equally forceful. President Monroe at first was willing to go along with Cannings proposal, but Adams argued against it. Adams believed that the United States should determine its own policy. It would be more candid, he said, as well as more dignified, to avow our principles explicitly to Russia and France, than to come in as a cock-boat in the wake of the British man-of-war.Monroe was persuaded that Adamss stand was right, and in 1823 the president announced the Monroe Doctrine. The doctrine contained two important principles. First, North and South America were no longer open to European colonization. Second, Europe must not interfere in the internal concerns of any nation in the western hemisphere. The first of these principles came directly from Adams.

buy custom JBS-SWIFT Company essay
buy custom JBS-SWIFT Company essay The case was on the firing of a number of Muslim workers of JBS-SWIFT Company who walked off their job when the company seemed reluctant to allow the Ramadan accommodation. Hundreds of Somali workers had left the slaughter house because they wouldnt be given a break for prayers. The U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) seemed convinced that JBS-SWIFT had violated the employees civil rights. The EEOC interpreted the case as a practice of biasness against the Muslims. Their basis of argument was the Federal law which requires the employers to accommodate the religious practices of its workers provided that doing so would not create an undue burden on the employer. The EEOC determined that JBS-SWIFT had violated a portion of Civil Rights Act that forbids certain forms of discrimination in employment. In its first complaint, it alleged that JBS-SWIFT had engaged in a pattern of practice of discrimination that included harassment, a hostile work environment and discriminatory job assignments. The commissions second allegation was that JBS-SWIFT retaliated against the employees by terminating their employment when they requested their evening to be moved to allow them fast and pray at sundown during the Month of Ramadan. Such alleged conduct violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. According to the commission, such practices by the company were targeting a class of Somali and Muslim employees. It interpreted the discrimination to be basically based on the race, religion and the nationality of the Somalis. The commission also stated that JBS-SWIFT denied accommodaton and retaliated against the workers who complained against it. The EEOCs determination meant that the way forward would be for JBS-SWIFT and the fired Muslim workers to sit and negotiate on the terms of settlement. Question 2 The JBS-SWIFT Company in its first quest for a solution fired some of its workers. The first victims were the workers who walked out and failed to return to work. However, their strategy of searching for a solution changed after loosing the case against the Muslim workers through the intervention of the EEOC. The company later considered setting up special prayer rooms for the Muslims workers where they carried out their religious obligation. The Muslim workers were even allowed to attend their five series of daily prayers. JBS-SWIFT agreed to accommodate religious practices of all its employees. The company established a close working relationship with its employees and their union representatives to accomplish the balance of reasonable accommodation and operational requirements. Contrary to this, Tyson Company decided to make accommodation of the Muslim faithful informal. The companys solution was based on the observation of holidays. Having witnessed resentment against its attempt to exchange Labor Day for Eid ul-Fitr from non-Muslims, the companys pursued an option of approving Eid ul-Fitr Holyday adding it to the seven other recognized paid holidays. This meant that the number of its paid holydays increased to eight. The strategy chosen as a solution by JBS SWIFT is likely to have the greatest impact on the company. This began to be witnnessed immediately as a number the companys non-Muslim workers held series of protests against the companys break time accommodation of Muslims. According to these workers, the changes were unfair to the workers of other religious beliefs. Considering that majority of its Muslim population are also non-American natives and the people of another race, the issues has the potential of causing divisions among the employees along the racial, religious, and nationality lines. With such trend of stereotyping, it may reach a time when the native non-Muslims will start having a feeling that the Somalis have come to dictate what is to be done in their own country and companies. The division would also be triggered by the fact that the non-Muslim workers would have to work for longer periods than their Muslim Counterparts. Therefore, by accommodating one groups needs, JBS-SWIFT Company could be providing a major disruption and resentments environments. This solution may result into a lasting tension among the companys workers causing a greater negative impact on the company compared to that implemented by the Tyson Company. On the other hand, despite losing another working day, the solution strategy implemented by Tyson Company would help realize a lasting peaceful coexistence among its workers. The Eid ul-Fitr Holyday having been widely accepted among the workers helped minimized the possibility of the company experiencing religious, racial, and nationality based conflicts. This means that the strategy be Tyson would automatically greatest positive impact on the company. Buy custom JBS-SWIFT Company essay

How to Help Students Take Notes
How to Help Students Take Notes Students often find taking notes in class a difficult proposition. Typically, they dont know what they should and should not include. Some tend to try and write everything you say without really hearing and integrating it. Others take very sparse notes, giving them little context for when they refer back to them later. Some students focus on irrelevant items in your notes, missing the key points entirely. Therefore, it is important that we as teachers help our students learn the best practices for taking effective notes. Following are some ideas that you can use to help students become more comfortable and better at note taking in the classroom setting. Scaffold Your Notes This simply means that you are giving your students clues to the key items you will be covering when you lecture to the students. At the beginning of the year, you should provide the students with a fairly detailed scaffold or outline. They can then take notes on this scaffold as you talk. As the year progresses, you can use less and less detail until you simply list out the key topics and subtopics you will be covering. However, it is important to note that you should give students a chance to read through the scaffold before you actually begin your lecture. Always Use the Same Key Words As you are lecturing, highlight key topics and ideas in some way. At the beginning of the year, you should be very clear when you are covering a key point that the students should be sure to remember. As the year goes on, you can make your hints more subtle. Though, remember, the goal of teaching is not to trip up your students. Ask Questions Throughout Asking questions throughout your lecture serves a few purposes. It keeps students on their toes, it checks comprehension, and it highlights key points you want them to remember. However, with that said it is important that your questions do cover key points. Introduce Each Topic Before Presenting Details Some teachers lecture by providing students with a lot of facts and expecting them to connect them to the overall topic. However, this can be very confusing. Instead, you should introduce the topic and fill in details always showing how it relates to the topic. Review Each Topic Before Moving On As you wrap up each key topic or subtopic, you should refer back to it again and restate one or two key sentences the students should remember. Teach Students to Use a Two-Column System In this system, students take their notes in the left column. Later, they add information in the right column from their textbooks and other readings. Collect Notes and Check Them Take a look at what students are doing and give them feedback to help them improve. You can do this right away or after they go home and finish out their notes from the textbook. Despite the evidence which shows that students need help taking notes, many teachers do not see the need to help them by scaffolding and using the other ideas listed here. This is very sad, for listening, taking effective notes, and then referring to these notes when studying helps reinforce learning for our students. Note taking is a learned skill, therefore, it is important that we take the lead in helping students become effective note takers.

Film review about Infernal Affairs Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Film review about Infernal Affairs - Essay Example Before its official release, this film generated a lot of interest among the prospective audience because of the difference in concept to the other films that had recently come from Hong Kong. It can be said that the concept, upon which the film is based, is unique and extraordinarily few films have been created using the same concept. This film employs a vibrating abruptness that is usually found in the work of the writer and director Michael Mann. The theme of this film uses the techniques, which Mann used in the film Heat, and this theme can be seen almost to the last detail. It has the same cold bloodedness that was displayed in the latter film and this, indeed, makes it one of a kind. When the film was released, it did not disappoint those who had expected it to have the qualities that were unique, fun, and at the same time made the film a serious picture to watch. It looks at the relationship between the police and the criminal underworld in a new perspective that many would co nsider impossible. It set a new record, which many Hong Kong films of the same genre from that time on have been trying to reach. This film is, therefore, worthy of the adoration that many of its fans have had, and continue to have, for it. The film gives the viewer a glance into the criminal underworld that is dominated by the Triad, where criminal mastermind Hon Sam believes that he can make his gang live outside the law. To achieve this feat, he sends a group of young men to join the police academy so that when they become police officers, they will be able to keep any attention from his activities from the police (Marchetti 95). The main aim is to keep ahead of the police, by getting to know what moves the police are planning against him before those plans can be executed. In this way, he will be able to run his operations safely without any fear of being caught. Unknown to Hon, the police are planning almost the exact thing against him. They want to place a mole within his orga nization so that the mole can tell them the moves that Hon makes, hence ensuring that he is caught red-handed. Under the supervision of Superintendent Wong, Chan is chosen to become the mole in Honââ¬â¢s triad organization, and to achieve this, there is a public demonstration where Chan is kicked out of the Academy despite being the best student. This leads him to enter the criminal underworld as an undercover cop, with only two people in the police department knowing his identity. The duty, which has been assigned to Chan, is a perilous one indeed, because he is tasked to remain with the triads until such a time as they are brought down, no matter how long it takes. Within the same academy as Chan is one Lau, who is a Triad mole tasked with keeping Hon up to date about the police movement against him. The entire movie is based on the parallel lives, which Lau and Chan live as moles in each otherââ¬â¢s organizations and how these lives come to profoundly affect them personally (Bradshaw). There is a sense, around the main characters of the film, of being disconnected and alienated and this helps to increase the excitement that one feels when watching it. This feeling keeps one wondering what is going to happen next, ensuring that one fully concentrates on the film, so the latter scenes are not missed out. These two characters are, unknowingly, brought together at the beginning of the film, each not having a hint

Computer Network Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Computer Network - Essay Example Moreover, there is no documentation for the current IT infrastructure. There is no documentation explaining the network setup in the company. Also, the software and the hardware are outdated. Considering that the computers are still running windows XP, it implies that the OS may not support the current versions of application software and hardware needed to run the business as per the requirements. Considering the above stated issues, itââ¬â¢s clear that the WLA Company IT infrastructure needs to be restructured, redesigned and updated to meet the current IT requirements. This involves updating both the software and the hardware parts of the current system, designing new network infrastructure to cater for the needs of the company and training the existing employees on how to use the lately installed networking system. To solve the above-connoted issues a network system has to be set up. This network system will consist of client computers, servers and other peripheral devices such as printers, fax machines, telephone etc. (i.e. a client/server network is set up). The best network design for this company is peer-to-peer design. But the rapid growth of the company calls for the preparation of the company for further expansion by allowing flexibility. In this regard, the best network design will be a hybrid network. With this setup, account and permission will be required to access file on the server, while at the same time, access to other computers on the network will be shared equally. This will minimize the cost of setting up the network while at the same time bringing in efficiency. The hardware and software explain below are recommended to ensure maximum functioning of the company activities. All software and hardware that will be required for WLA business is listed below and why the justification of why it is required. Garrett (2003)
